Chapter Fifteen

Raging Wind

Kira let out a deep breath, relaxing her shoulders and listening to the sound of the stream flowing around her. The woods were filled with the sounds of nature, and she let them all sink in as she tried to clear her mind of any other thoughts.

She had never tried meditation before now, but she found it almost impossible not to think of all the things swirling around in her brain. Thoughts of Zowan and Anzu kept coming up, or tomorrow’s Shadow demonstration. She tried to focus on the sound of the stream, and the birds chirping as they flitted from tree to tree.

She opened her eyes as she heard footsteps in the woods.

“That was quite the demonstration this morning,” Raiden said, stepping onto the rock island.

“It’ll be a hard one to follow tomorrow,” Kira said. “Especially when I don’t even know how to do Shadow magic yet.”

Raiden sat down beside her. “And so you’ve decided to speak to me again. You know, you’re not very subtle.”

Kira snorted, then looked him right in the eyes. It was startling how much he looked like Zowan. “Look, I’m sorry I agreed to Lady Madora’s request before I realized what she was asking.”

Raiden sighed. “I still won’t do it Kira. I’m not giving that woman power over me. I’m not implying that your worst memory won’t be difficult to give her, but I’m not giving her mine. I’ve led the Shadow region for several difficult decades, and I’ll be drowned in darkness before I give Madora and the Stone Mountains a foothold over Heliodor.”

“But what if I had something to offer you in exchange?”

He raised a thick eyebrow.

Kira bunched her fists together. She had to get those memories. “You agree to Lady Madora’s terms so I can get my memory, and I’ll go train at the Spire with you. It’ll be a big deal for you, for Shadow, for the Spire. People will—”

“—Done.”

She drew in a quick breath. “Done? You’ll do it?”

Raiden’s face lit up. “If you come train at the Spire, whatever damage giving Madora my memories does will be negated.”

“Well, okay then. We have a deal.” Kira’s chest swelled, her breath suddenly coming quick. Going to the Spire could be a long way off—she would think of that when all this was over. What did the far future matter, if she could look into the past? I hope I haven’t just made a big mistake, she thought.

“Let’s get started then, shall we?” Raiden said, rubbing his hands together. “We’ve got to get you ready for tomorrow. Master Starwind informed me you’ll be expected to perform around mid-morning, which should give us some time to meet with Lady Madora early.”

He stood and raised a hand in the air and waved it. Kira wondered if he was doing some Shadow magic until Ayana melted out of the trees and approached the stream.

“Please go down to speak with Lady Madora,” Raiden told her. “Request a meeting tomorrow morning. I don’t want to trust this to a note.
